Mary Swallow

Mary Ruth DeFur Swallow, age 94, of Scottsville, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, September 8, 2021, at Cal Turner Nursing and Specialty Care, in Scottsville, Kentucky.

She was born July 17, 1927 in Poseyville, Indiana, the youngest daughter of the late Iva Pearl Roberts DeFur and Earl DeFur. She married Frank Swallow Jr. who precedes her in death, on May 28, 1949 in Henderson, Kentucky. Mary Ruth raised her family and then worked as a school librarian before returning to school to become a nurse. She worked in hospitals and nursing homes until her retirement. Mary Ruth was kind, quiet, intelligent, and possessed a witty sense of humor. She was nurturing and generous, as she raised her family and they lovingly referred to her as GrandMary. She enjoyed traveling, playing bridge and most of all she enjoyed her family.  She was a member of Scottsville First United Methodist Church.

Those left to cherish her memory include her four children; Melinda Swallow of Rockport, IN;  Frank Swallow and wife Kim of Waterloo, IA; Kelly Wanta and husband Steve of Scottsville, KY; Mary Ellen Swallow and husband Jerry of Tucson, AZ; seven grandchildren; Kathleen Swallow, David Swallow, Adam Wanta, Joseph Swallow, Megan Hoggard, Molly Shords and Amy Wanta; six great-grandchildren; Aria, Aiden, Lola, Omni, Lucy and Laney also survive.

In addition to her parents and husband she is preceded in death by two brothers Everett DeFur and John Lee DeFur; one great-grandchild Samuel Carter Joe Gibbs.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 16, 2021, at 10:00AM at Scottsville First United Methodist Church in Scottsville, Kentucky.

Visitation will be held  Saturday, October 16, 2021, after 9:00AM until time of service at Scottsville First United Methodist Church.

Graveside services will be held Monday, October 18, 2021 at 11:00AM at Sunset Hill Cemetery in Rockport, Indiana.

Memorial contributions may take the form of donations to Scottsville First United Methodist Church; Allen County Special Olympics or Hospice of Southern Kentucky.
